Question by depressible: Do gambling addicts get hooked on “information bets”?
I can imagine that gambling addicts may feed their addiction with sports bets, video poker, and slot machines. In places were “information bets” are allowed, do they feed their addiction with these? By “information bets”, I mean wagers such as “will candidate X win election Y”. — Sources please?

The scope and breadth of gambling addiction is a target-rich environment since nobody has really defined what it is, how it manifests itself, where it leaves being a gambling addiction and becomes a personality issue and just compulsive behavior.
We know what an alcoholic is addicted to, we know what a heroin addict is addicted to. What a gambling addict is addicted to is entirely up for grabs.
My personal thought is that a gambling addict is a person who has withdrawal symptoms if he doesn’t snort, inject or ingest enough slot machine tokens or decks of cards.
Everything else is just a matter of taking responsibility for lousy choices and changing our behaviors.
no
Sure, they get addicted, its hard to pass by bets that are available to bet on.
I used to work with a woman who loved to gamble and we had a boss who loved to micromanage us.
So, one day he came in, barked orders at us and walked out back to his office.
I laid a $20 bill on the table and wagered her the boss would not return in the next 5 minutes and we both had to keep our mouths shut.
So, she laid her $20 down and we marked the time. The boss walked back in 4 minutes and 57 seconds later. She won by 3 seconds.
I swear that coworker of mine would wager on nearly anything.
There are two types of gamblers – action and escape. I believe Active Gamblers would fall into the scenario you mention above. What you are calling “information bets” remind me a lot of “prop bets” For instance, Bodog.com reports that, “Proposition wagers have become a huge part of betting on the big game, and since releasing roughly 150 prop wagers last year, we have raised the bar yet again this year.” Prop bets can be exotic bets like which team will score the most touchdowns, which team will shoot the most three pointers, or which running back will rush for the most yards.
“Action Gamblers: Almost all are male. Gambling generally started early in teen years, and the individual is generally very bright, testing high on IQ tests. Their outlets are games requiring skill, including pari-mutuel, black jack, poker, sports betting, and recently, trading of stocks, commodities, futures, options, and bonds. Gambling conveys a sense of euphoria, similar to a drug induced high. Generally, very ego driven, controlling, risk taking, narcissistic, sociable, and, like the narcissist, in need of approval, affirmation, and confirmation.
These individuals generally possess very low self-esteem, and has a tendency to bend the truth or lie. The gamblers of this problem category proceed generally through four phases of Winning (Dollars) – Losing -Desperation – Hopelessness. Generally, the behavior persists between 10 and 30 years before circumstances have reached a sufficient low for help to be sought. By that time the addiction has assumed far greater importance than family, friends, jobs, outside interests, and the individual is in serious jeopardy of losing absolutely everything.”
